SumUp broadens range of payment options for merchants in Switzerland

Berlin – May 5, 2015

SumUp, the company that enables merchants to take debit and credit card payments with their smartphones, is proud to announce that merchants in Switzerland can now process American Express card payments. This is an exciting development for Swiss-based SumUp merchants as it means they can now take payments from American Express Cardmembers. SumUp’s ability to process American Express payments means that it will accept more types of cards in more regions than any other mobile point-of-sale technology provider worldwide.

For the settlement of an American Express payment, SumUp charges a 2.5% transaction fee, which is the same for all credit card transactions, including Visa and MasterCard. The simple registration process that allows a merchant to accept card payments within minutes, now also includes American Express acceptance. All existing SumUp merchants can now accept American Express cards automatically with their SumUp PIN + card terminal.

Since May 2014 Sumup has actively cooperated with UBS which acts as the leading distributor of SumUp devices in Switzerland and which also offers UBS customers a discounted device.

Daniel Klein, CEO of Sumup: "For sellers, it is extremely frustrating when they're missing out on business just because they cannot accept the customer's card. And the situation is also unsatisfactory for the customer who has to go home empty handed. That is why we are very pleased that we are now providing American Express acceptance to our merchants in Switzerland. They will benefit and so will the large base of loyal card members from American Express."

David Rickenbacher, Product and Market Development Transaction Banking at UBS, said: "The simple card acceptance with SumUp is extremely well received by our customers and has a positive effect on their turnover. We welcome very much that American Express is now one of the portfolio of cards that are accepted by SumUp. A win-win situation for the merchant and the customer."
