1. Draw up your Business Plan
To make sure you nail your business essentials, a decked out business plan is a vital prerequisite. 2. Get creative with your concept
Certain things come easy for us, we all have a go-to fantasy name of what our would-be nightclub would be called equipped with a vague concept on how we’d want it to look like. That’s a great place to start – but at this point, you’ll want to get nitty-gritty with the details! A venue like a nightclub is its music, décor, and even furniture – do you have a vibe in mind? What does that entail? What colour themes and physicalities will help you achieve this and make sure all of these proponents are in sync with one another?
You’ll also want to add some logistics to the equation. Have you considered where you want to open the bar? You’ll need to scout the area and make sure your vision isn’t overlapping with an already popular bar or nightclub down the road. Whether that means being flexible on the concept or casing another location is up to you – your priorities can shift but it’s a good idea to note where you’re willing to compromise and where you are not.
3. Get your license
You’ll have to purchase a premise and personal licence to operate a nightclub.
A Premise licence
A premises licence covers all aspects of how a nightclub operates including the supply of alcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshment. This is issued by local licensing authorities where you’ll have to provide basic information around opening hours, safety features in place and activities you’ll be hosting.
You’ll also have to demonstrate how you’ll uphold the following Licensing Act objectives:
Preventing crime and disorder
Ensuring public safety
Preventing public nuisance and protecting children from harm
While the process of meeting these requirements vary, it’ll often include health and safety procedures, preventative measures and security equipment.
This will allow you to supply or authorise the supply of alcohol and will require you to identify a personal licence holder. The license holder, often the owner, will need to earn an accredited qualification from an approved training provider to ensure that they are aware of licensing requirements and their wider social responsibilities.
4. Budget to cover your nightclub & bar essentials
You’ll want to consider the significant costs you’ll be looking at and decide whether you’ll want to open and build a venture from scratch or instead buy an existing nightclub venue with much of the facilities already incorporated.
This will of course save you a significant amount in costs and you may even find customers, staff and equipment already in place. By buying an already established club venue, you may also be able to access invaluable information on the do’s and don’ts as the previous owners will likely have tried and tested a few marketing strategies, gotten a better understanding of the locals and what has worked historically.

5. Promoting your nightclub
