What is a contactless payment?
A contactless payment lets a customer pay by tapping their card, phone or smartwatch on a card reader - with no PIN needed for most purchases (typically up to around £100). It uses NFC technology to transfer encrypted payment data in seconds, with no swipe, insert or signature required. It can be accepted with a card machine, a card reader or Tap to Pay on your smartphone, and has become one of the most popular ways to pay in the UK.
Contactless payments are simple
Customers only need to tap their card or smartphone on the card machine to pay. There is no need for cash or a PIN for most purchases, which keeps the checkout experience fast and smooth.
Most UK banks set a contactless limit of around £100 per transaction - high enough to cover everyday spending in supermarkets, cafés and petrol stations.
Contactless payments are secure
Every transaction is encrypted and validated by the bank, and card details are never stored on the reader - the card number is replaced by a one-time token that changes with each payment.
Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay add extra protection through tokenisation and biometric checks like fingerprint or facial recognition. These layers of security mean that fraud with contactless payment is rare, even without entering a PIN.
Contactless payments are flexible
They work with debit and credit cards as well as smartphones and smartwatches. Businesses can accept them using SumUp contactless card readers, QR codes, payment links or directly on their phone with Tap to Pay with SumUp, available on Android and iPhone.
This flexibility makes it easier to meet customer expectations, whether you are taking payments at the counter, at a table, at an event or on the go.
How does contactless payment work?
Contactless payment uses Near Field Communication (NFC) - a short-range wireless technology built into modern cards, phones and smartwatches. It's a type of radio-frequency identification (RFID) that lets two devices talk to each other when they're held close together. Here's what happens in the couple of seconds a tap takes:
1. The customer taps. They hold their card or device within 2–4 cm of your reader, over the contactless symbol (the Wi-Fi icon turned on its side).
2. Data is exchanged securely. The NFC chip and the reader swap encrypted, one-time data. The real card number is never shared in the open, so it can't be reused or cloned.
3. The bank checks it. The payment details are sent to the customer's bank for authorisation.
4. It's approved - almost instantly. You'll see a tick, hear a beep or get a green light to confirm the sale has gone through.
5. A receipt is issued. Send it digitally by SMS, email or QR code, or print one if your device has a printer.
For larger payments - usually over about £100 - the customer is prompted to enter their PIN. Banks also occasionally ask for a PIN after several taps in a row, as a simple extra security check.
Types of contactless payments
"Contactless" covers a few different ways to tap and pay. With SumUp you can accept all of them:
Contactless cards
Debit and credit cards with an embedded NFC chip, marked with the contactless symbol. Almost every card issued in the UK is now contactless.
Mobile wallets
Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, confirmed with Face ID, a fingerprint or a passcode. These aren't bound by the usual card limit, because the biometric check verifies the payer.
Wearables
Smartwatches and fitness bands with a card loaded into a wallet app. The customer just taps their wrist.
Remote contactless
QR codes and payment links let customers pay without being face to face, perfect for deposits, invoices and orders you don't take in person.
Why contactless payments matter for your business
The benefits of contactless payments
Customers now expect businesses to accept contactless payments, whether through a card reader or directly on your phone with Tap to Pay. By offering both, you can:
Speed up service and reduce queues - a single tap is far quicker than cash or chip & PIN.
Give people the payment method they already prefer - card, phone or smartwatch, whatever they reach for.
Make every sale safe and reliable - each transaction is encrypted and validated by the bank.
Avoid losing customers who no longer carry cash - and capture the sale you'd otherwise miss.
SumUp makes it possible to accept contactless with no contracts, no hidden fees and a simple 1.69% per transaction on the pay-as-you-go plan.
And the demand is no longer optional. Contactless is now the UK's everyday payment method:
Contactless cards make up 89% of all cards in circulation in the UK, with 153 million now in people's pockets (UK Finance).
UK consumers made 18.9 billion contactless card payments in 2024 - around 60% of all card payments (UK Finance).
94.6% of all eligible in-store card payments under £100 were contactless in 2024 (Barclays Consumer Spend).
Cash fell below 10% of all UK payments (9%) for the first time in 2024, while 57% of adults are now registered for mobile wallets (UK Finance).
In short: businesses that don't accept contactless risk losing sales to those that do.
Are there any limits or drawbacks?
Like any technology, contactless comes with a few rules worth knowing:
Most UK banks cap contactless card payments at around £100 - above that, customers pay by chip & PIN, or with a mobile wallet, which usually isn't capped. Since March 2026 there's no single national limit - banks set their own, and most have kept £100.
Banks sometimes ask for a PIN after several taps in a row, as a routine security check.
A small number of customers still worry about fraud - but contactless fraud is rare, and UK banks offer strong consumer protection.
Overall, the convenience far outweighs the limits, and the option to fall back on chip & PIN means you never lose a sale.
Are contactless payments secure?
Yes - contactless is built with several layers of protection for both you and your customers.
Every transaction is encrypted from the moment it's made, and the card details are turned into a one-time code (a token) that changes with each purchase, so there's nothing useful for a fraudster to copy. Your SumUp reader meets strict PCI-DSS security standards, and sensitive card data is never stored on the device.
When a customer pays with Apple Pay or Google Pay, the payment is confirmed with biometrics - Face ID, a fingerprint or a passcode - adding another layer on top. It's why fraud on contactless payments is rare, even without a PIN.
