About the role

As a (Senior) Embedded Application Engineer you will be part of the Hardware team and you’ll be working on our proprietary card reader - Solo. You will be part of one of our small and highly skilled cross-functional teams and work together with Product Managers, Embedded Engineers, Backend Engineers, GUI Engineers, and more.

As (Senior) Embedded Application Engineer at SumUp you will work on the application layer of the payment device which involves system design and software architecture. You should be a software engineer with a product mindset and interest in business logic who can fully own the features you are working on.

To be successful in this role you should be able to follow good software engineering principles, write clean code and tests, and be open to constantly learning and improving your craft. It will be expected from you to not only ship features, but also to contribute to the decision making process.

About the team

You have probably used our card readers to buy a cappuccino or pay your hairdresser already. In Hardware, we are passionate about creating these beautifully designed card payment devices and accessories that enable our merchants to start, run, and grow their own businesses. In doing so, we deal with a diverse range of engineering topics - industrial and electronic design, embedded systems, all the way to mobile apps and backend services.

What you’ll do

  • Design, develop, maintain the specification, implementation of the application software that runs on payment processing terminals and their accessories (printers, etc.)

  • Perform technical analysis, verification and validation of the software

  • Execute code and architecture reviews to ensure the quality of implemented solutions

  • Develop software on embedded operating systems and bare-metal systems

  • Perform acceptance, functional, regression and exploratory testing on the SumUp platform

  • Help investigate and resolve production issues via analysis of logs and/or reports given from customer support

  • Create test plans and  documentation

  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues within and outside of the Software Department to deliver best value

You’ll be great for this position if

  • You create clean, maintainable code in C with unit tests.

  • You possess a good understanding of embedded systems.

  • You are proficient with Git.

  • You have experience working with embedded Linux.

  • You have a good understanding of networking protocols such as TCP, UDP, HTTP etc.

  • You have a desire to learn and improve.

  • You are open to share knowledge and experience with team members.

Nice to haves:

  • You have experience with modern C++.

  • You have an understanding of UI/UX or have experience working on GUI.

  • Experience in software architecture and design patterns.

  • Knowledge on REST APIs
