Who we are

Our global community is made up of hundreds of talented Engineers and Product Managers. We collectively build, plan and fine-tune the technology that drives SumUp and empowers small businesses around the world. We’re on a mission to redefine financial inclusion through accessible technology and products.

Our philosophy

We believe real innovation happens when barriers are removed and teams are empowered to own their work. Our agile framework allows us to adapt quickly and foster an environment fuelled by curiosity. We’re efficient, collaborative and constantly improving the way we work through self-reflection.

Our structure

We’re composed of several teams we call tribes. Each tribe consists of several smaller, cross-functional squads. Equipped with the necessary skills to realise their missions, squads are completely autonomous. Whether it’s building a product for our merchants or an internal platform, each team is the owner of their domain.

Hack Week

We're on a mission to lead payment solutions for small merchants globally. To achieve that, we need to deeply understand the user's needs and foster innovation among our tech teams to deliver cutting-edge products.

Hack Week is an opportunity to unite members of our Engineering, Product and Design community in one place to step away from their daily tasks, collaborate, unleash creativity and bring new ideas to life.

Hack Week 2025

Over 100 SumUppers gathered at the historic Schloss Beesenstedt, a 19th-century manor in the German countryside. Guided by the theme “Money, Money, Money”, our global teams developed projects that blended technical excellence with merchant-focused impact, turning ideas into solutions that matter.

Hack Week 2024

In 2024, we took over the iconic Pyramid of Tirana, a landmark in Albania’s capital. Under the theme “SumUp the Parts”, more than 250 SumUppers came together to merge products and services into innovative, end-to-end solutions, showcasing the power of cross-team collaboration on a global scale.

Hack Week 2023

Our community gathered in Bulgaria for a week of innovation, exploration, and connection. Focused on empowering small business owners, teams tapped into the emerging potential of AI tools, proving that technology and creativity go hand in hand when building for real-world impact.

Hack Week 2022

In Portugal, our teams dedicated five days to building impactful solutions for our merchants, consumers, and colleagues. Guided by the Japanese theme Seisō (清掃) – Shine, squads revived ideas previously set aside, proving that even the smallest initiatives can create meaningful change.
